The School of Music of Shanxi University is the earliest school established in Shanxi Province to train senior professionals in music, dance and art. Its predecessor was the Shanxi Arts College, which was founded in 1958. In 1962, Shanxi Art Institute was incorporated into Shanxi University. In the same year, the Department of Arts was established at Shanxi University. In 1990, the Department of Music was established at Shanxi University, which was expanded into the Academy of Music in 1996.
The academy now has eight departments of musicology, composition, orchestra, folk music, folk vocal, Vocal Performance, keyboard, dance and an art research institute, and also has five art groups: choir, Shanxi Folk Song Choir, symphony orchestra, folk orchestra and dance group. There are four undergraduate majors in musicology, composition and technical theory of composition, music performance, and dance choreography, and three academic master's degree granting programs in art theory, music and dance, and drama and film (jointly with the College of Liberal Arts) and one professional master's degree program in art (MFA).
In our Academy, we have 80 teachers, including 10 professors, 21 associate professors, 37 lecturers and 12 assistant professors. We also employ more than 20 experts from the Central Conservatory of Music, China Conservatory of Music, Shanghai Conservatory of Music and the United States, Britain, Russia, Canada, Japan and other countries as part-time (visiting) professors. Deng Yingyi, the soprano singer and the famous song translation master in China, has taught in our school. There are 1070 students in our college, including 921 undergraduates and 149 graduate students.
The Academy of Music has always adhered to the philosophy and historical mission of the Academy of Music, which is to bring together the essence of Chinese and Western arts and to promote the culture of Sanjin. Over the years, the school has been comprehensively implementing the Chinese Communist Party's education policy, guided by the school's objectives and the "Double First-Class" initiative development strategy, following the laws of art education, relying on the long history, culture and art resources of Shanxi and the advantages of our comprehensive university with more disciplines, with the purpose of establishing moral education, centering on talent training, and oriented by the needs of society. After a series of undergraduate teaching reforms, the quality of talent training has been gradually improved, cultivating a large number of excellent literary and educational talents for our province and China, and many students have become excellent teachers in domestic well-known institutions, the main force of scientific research institutions and the backbone of performance groups, establishing a sustainable leading position in music and art education in the province.
In the past three years, we have sent an average of 220 undergraduate music and dance professionals to the society every year. The rate of graduate students has increased year by year, reaching 22%, and the number of students entering the Central Conservatory of Music, Shanghai Conservatory of Music, China Conservatory of Music, China Academy of Art, University of Macau and other outstanding institutions in China has increased year by year, and the one-time employment and entrepreneurship rate has remained above 80%. In terms of artistic practice, the Academy has actively developed the discipline of "folk songs, folk music and folk dance" in Shanxi, and created music and dance works with Shanxi characteristics, so that the discipline of music and dance performance has formed distinctive regional characteristics. In terms of cultural exchange and service, we provide an average of more than 50 performances per year, which not only promotes the construction of campus culture, but also contributes to the public cultural services in our province.

In addition to the teaching work, our institute also attaches importance to the promotion and improvement of the teaching level by artistic research, and has achieved a series of high-level theoretical research and practical achievements. In the past three years, our young and middle-aged teachers have won many awards in international and domestic music and dance competitions such as "Youth Song Contest" and "Golden Bell Award", with 67 awards, and 244 awards for students under the guidance of teachers. The faculty and students went to the United States, Germany, France, the Czech Republic, Armenia, Vietnam and other countries to participate in cultural exchange performances 12 times. Our teachers have published 33 academic papers, 10 monographs, 23 faculty concerts, and 178 important practical performances in important domestic and international academic journals such as "Literature and Arts Research" and "Music Research".
We have been granted 4 national patents, undertaken 26 national and provincial research projects, and increased our research funding year by year.

In the new era and new journey, in order to fully realize the development goals of the college and the university, the academy will vigorously carry forward the fine tradition of the college and the university, continue to comprehensively strengthen the construction of the party, update the concept of education and teaching, carry out in-depth teaching reform, continuously improve the quality of teaching, and continue to strive for the construction of a high-level research university of first-class level and regional characteristics, and achieve the comprehensive revitalization of the university.
