School of Foreign Languages

The School of Foreign Languages of Shanxi University is the owner of one of the earliest foreign language disciplines established by colleges and universities in China. Its predecessor was the English class of the liberal arts of Shanxi University opened in 1919. In 1943, the English Department was expanded to the Department of Foreign Languages. In 1996, the Department of Foreign Languages was renamed the School of Foreign Languages.

The School of Foreign Languages has experienced many vicissitudes over the past period of more than one hundred years. A large number of famous teachers and scholars promoted culture and education here in succession. With industrious efforts, they have made remarkable achievements in both foreign language education and academic research. The outstanding representatives include the famous translator Guan Qitong, who systematically translated and introduced the philosophical works of Francis Bacon, George Berkeley, David Hume, Descartes, etc. to China, Jiang Shaoyuan who was known as one of the founders of Chinese folklore, the famous literary critic and literary theorist Chang Feng who was active in the 1930s and 1940s, Yu Zhen (Li Yuzhen) who was famous for translating the works of Russia and Soviet poets such as Pushkin, Lermontov and Vladimir Mayakovsky, Du Renzhi who studied both Chinese and Western philosophy, initiated and edited the International Philosophy Today, Nie Chongxin who translated such famous social science works as the Complete Works of Washington and On Democracy by Carl Cohen, Peng Fumin who translated a batch of Chinese contemporary literature works such as Guo Moruo’s plays into English, Gao Jian who was long dedicated to the translation of English and American prose and poetry as well as the study of translation theory, the multilingual scholar Yang Deyou who translated more than 40 social science works and literary works from English, Russian, German, French, Polish and other languages and won 2002 Polish Government Award for Achievement in Spreading Polish Culture and Wu Changfu who participated in the translation of the new Complete Works of Lenin by the Central Compilation and Translation Bureau.

After more than a hundred years of development, especially after the forty years of comprehensive construction and rapid development since the implementation of reform and opening up, the school has formed a relatively complete system of majors and disciplines, and has made great contributions in training high-quality foreign language talents, conducting scientific research and serving the local economic construction of Shanxi. The school has six undergraduate majors: English, Russian, Japanese, German, French and Translation. At the level of graduate education, the school has one first-level discipline master’s degree program, which currently enrolls academic master’s students in four fields, namely English language and literature, Japanese language and literature, Russian language and literature, and foreign linguistics and applied linguistics. It has also three professional degree programs in English translation, Japanese interpretation and Japanese translation. At the doctoral level, there is a second-level doctoral program in Verbal Interaction. Foreign linguistics and applied linguistics is a key construction discipline supported by Shanxi Province. In 2019, the English major was approved as a national first-class undergraduate major under the “Double-10000 Plan” and a first-class undergraduate major in Shanxi Province as well. In 2020 and 2021, the Russian major and the Translation major were included in the list of the first-class undergraduate majors in Shanxi Province successively.

Inheriting the fine academic tradition, the school has made new achievements continuously. In recent years, faculty members of the School of Foreign Languages have undertaken more than 20 research projects sponsored by the National Social Science Fund and the Humanities and Social Science Research Program Fund of the Ministry of Education, as well as a large number of other research projects. Academic achievements have been published in almost all important foreign language journals in China, as well as such first-class international academic journals as Assessment & Evaluation in Higher Education, Discourse Processes, Discourse Studies and English for Specific Purposes, Intercultural Pragmatics, Language in Society, Notes and Queries. It marks that the academic team of the school has gradually entered the main position of the international academic field.

The teaching tasks of the school are divided into teaching professional foreign languages and public foreign languages. There are 146 full-time teachers, including 9 professors, 35 associate professors and 34 teachers with doctoral degrees. The whole teaching staff is reasonably structured in terms of age, professional title and educational background, and its development momentum is sound. In addition, all majors of the school have employed foreign teachers.

The school has a clear and stable education philosophy and adheres to the idea of emphasizing connotation and quality so as to cultivate students with solid basic skills, broad knowledge horizons, and great potential for development. In recent years, the pass rates of the school in the national tests (both Grade 4 and Grade 8) designed for foreign language majors have far exceeded the national average. Students of all majors have also participated in various professional competitions and achieved outstanding results.

The School of Foreign Languages of Shanxi University has embarked on the fast lane of development. It is believed that the school will make steady progress from a new starting point and keep up its efforts to write new chapters.
