School of Fine Arts

  The School of Fine Arts of Shanxi University is a professional institution that has the longest history and the most profound artistic tradition in arts education of Shanxi Province. Its initial predecessor was Shanxi Art School, which was founded in 1951 and renamed Shanxi Art College in 1958. In 1962, the college saw the incorporation of the Department of Fine Arts and the Department of Music into Shanxi University and the consequent formation of the Department of Art. In 1990, the Department of Art was reformed, thus there being the independent Department of Fine Arts that became the School of Fine Arts of Shanxi University (SFASU) six years later. During the course of its nearly 60-year history, the institution has formed the cultural tradition of “following the times and inheriting the spirit”, the academic orientation of “integrating the artistic quintessence of different nations and enhancing the distinctive culture of Shanxi” and the excellent academic atmosphere of being “embracing and enterprising”.

  The School of Fine Arts of Shanxi University enjoys a full range of specialties and a wide variety of education levels. It has one specialty, namely the Science of Art as a first-level discipline, which is entitled to confer the Master’s degree, and three specialties that fall into the second-level discipline, namely the Science of Fine Arts, the Science of Designing Art and the Science of Art, which are entitled to confer the Master’s degree. It has also one specialty that is entitled to confer the professional Master’s degree of Fine Arts (MFA), one cultivating center for teachers from higher educational institutions to pursue in-service study for a Master’s degree of Fine Arts and one key specialty of Shanxi Province, namely the Science of Art. It also has three research rooms for Formative Art, Designing Art and Fine Arts History respectively, which are subdivided into 11 undergraduate research studios, namely Chinese Painting, Chinese Calligraphy, Oil Painting, Engraving, Sculpture, History of Fine Arts, Environmental Art Design, Urban Design, Decorative & Public Art, Visual Communication Design and New Media Art Design. Apart from the above-mentioned orientations, the graduate courses cover other specialties, including Art History & Art Archeology, Philosophy of Art, Folk Art, Protection & Utilization of Art Heritage and Industry Designing.

  The School of Fine Arts of Shanxi University boasts excellent school-running conditions and an agreeable learning environment. It owns an area of 12,000 square meters used for teaching purposes, a collection of over 10,000 books and 10 million yuan worth of equipment for teaching and scientific research. At present, SFASU possesses a comprehensive art laboratory under the joint support of Shanxi Province and the Ministry of Education as well as several scientific research institutions, namely the Research Institute of the Science of Art, the Research Institute of the Art of Calligraphy, the Research Institute of Designing Art, the Research Institute of Landscape, the Research Center for Fine Arts Creation, the Research Center for Pottery Art & Public Art. Moreover, there are nine social academic societies based in the school.

  The School of Fine Arts of Shanxi University enjoys abundant teaching resources. Now there are 74 full-time teachers (5 professors and 24 associate professors) and 3 solid academic teams involving three specialties, namely Formative Art, Artistic Design and Art History. The school has invited 41 artists and scholars from home and abroad to be honorary, guest or part-time professors.

  Now there are 300 postgraduates and 600 undergraduates. Their education has been adhering to the “three equally-emphasizings” principle, namely equally emphasizing professional education and quality education, equally emphasizing theory and practice and equally emphasizing basic skills and innovative ability. Up to now, the school has altogether cultivated over 3000 students of various kinds ever since its establishment. Most of them have become part of the backbone force of the field they are working in and have made great contribution to the development of art. Consequently the school has now become an important base of cultivating art professionals in Shanxi Province.

  In the recent five years, students with SFASU have won a total of 340 prizes in contests of various kinds. And teachers with SFASU have had over 150 research results awarded with prizes of both international and national levels and 32 books and albums of pictures as well as over 600 first-class academic papers and artistic works published. They have also completed nearly 100 longitudinal and horizontal scientific research projects funded with over 10 million yuan, thus making due contribution to the development of local economy. 

  Attaching importance to research cooperation and academic exchange, SFASU has established friendly cooperation with many colleges and research institutions in China and other countries including the United Kingdom, Japan and South Korea, laying a good foundation for the construction of an open professional school in line with international standards.

  The School of Fine Arts shall inherit the tradition of the 100-year-old Shanxi University and adhere to its overall objectives in the hope of building up a first-class school of fine arts of its kind nationwide, which attaches equal importance to research and teaching.
