  School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering of Shanxi University, originally Physics and Chemistry Department of Private China University, began to recruit students in 1931 and was renamed as Chemistry Department in 1934. The department was merged into School of Science of Shanxi University in 1949. Authorized by Shanxi University in 2001, School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering of Shanxi University was established by combination of Chemistry Department, Institute of Molecular Science and Test Center.

  At present, the school has 135 full-time teaching staff, including 101 teachers, 34 technicians and administration stuff. There are 29 professors, 21 associate professors and 25 lecturers, therein, 12 supervisors for doctoral students and 39 for masters. In addition, there are 33 teachers with doctorate and 44 teachers with master degree. Nowadays 648 undergraduates and 322 graduate students study in the school. The school has cultivated a variety of talents for the country and society in its 7,000 students.

  The school hosts 4 first degree research institutions, including the Engineering Research Center of Ministry of Education for Fine Chemicals, the Institute of Applied Chemistry, the Modern Research Center for Traditional Chinese Medicine and the Institute of Molecular Science. The school also hosts one chemistry center for post-doctoral studies, one chemistry specialized doctorate program, one Applied Chemistry doctorate program and 9 general Masters of Sciences/ Masters of Engineering Sciences, such as Organic Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry, Analytic Chemistry, physical Chemistry, Applied Chemistry, Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Pharmaceutical Analysis, Pharmacognosy, Chemical Engineering and Pharmaceutical Engineering. Three disciplines (Organic Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry and Applied Chemistry) are designated as provincial key- programs and Analytic Chemistry as key- constructing discipline. Its education programs extend to two specialities for undergraduates, chemistry and applied chemistry. The Experiment Chemistry Center of the school is designated as a constructing National Experimental Teaching Model Center. The school covers a floor space of 8000 square meters for teaching, research and experimental, houses teaching and hosts researching instruments with a total value of more than 10 million yuan RMB, while 150 sets of those equipment value over 100 thousand yuan RMB. The school has a collection of 20 thousand copies of professional books and 80 periodicals in Chinese or English in its library.

  The number of published academic papers of the school has reached 100 per year since 2002, in which more than 30 papers were cited by SCI and EI and 70 others were published on the core journals. The school acquires more than 80 research projects (about 6 million yuan RMB) per year. By far the school has successfully acquired 50 national research projects, one national “863” projects, one National 11th Five-Year Plan major scientific and technological issue and one key projects of National Natural Science Foundation. The assessment, transformation of scientific and technological achievements sums up to 10 projects each year. The number of application for patents has been 68, while 31 patents were authorized. Two projects in scientific research won the second prizes of National Scientific and Technological Advancement (2003) and the second prize of National Technological Inventions (2004), respectively. Nine projects won awards at provincial / ministerial levels.

  The school puts emphasis on the transformation of scientific and technological achievements. The national “863” projects, namely ”The key technology of catalytic synthesis of 1,4-butanediol from 1,4-butynediol---domestic research and development of the 2nd hydrogenation catalyst” has been highly successful. The independently produced industrial catalyst perfectly replaces the imported catalyst used in Shanxi Sanwei Group Co, Ltd. and achieves prominent social and economic benefits, indicating its good prospect of application and market. This preparative technique has reached the international advanced level and broke the overseas monopolization. Thus china became the 3rd country which holds the preparative technique of this catalyst and power of discourse in this technical field. This achievement makes breakthrough contribution to the technical innovation in the field of synthesis of 1,4- butanediol in China.

  The school attaches great importance to academic exchanges and cooperation between the school and enterprises. Up to now, it has established good academic relationship with 10 abroad universities and research institutions, 40 domestic universities and research institutions. In recent years, the school has taken firmer steps towards cooperating with some large and medium-size enterprises in product research and development, graduate training, job training and other aspects, for example, Shanxi Sanwei Group Co., Ltd., Taiyuan Iron and Steel (Group) Company, Tianji Coal Chemical Group Co., Ltd., Taiyuan Chemical Industry Group, Saiding Engineering Co., Ltd., China Bluestar Group and Taiyuan Qiaoyou Chemical Industry Co., Ltd. Especially, the Innovative Center of Graduate Education on Applied catalysis Science and technology, founded by the Engineering Research Center of Ministry of Education for Fine Chemicals and Shanxi Sanwei Group Co., Ltd., makes good use of the advantage of both scientific research sources and product market and provides a platform for postgraduate in creative communication and practice. The platform is beneficial to improve their practical ability and educational level, and tackles with the conflict of the theory divorced from practice in postgraduate training. By means of organizing joint tackling of major projects and breaking some key techniques, the core competency, profitable level and sustainable development of the enterprises have been promoted markedly. The Engineering Research Center is about to become a scientific research base with enormous technological potential, a research and development base of products and a supportive base of innovative and high technology, improve its capability and level in serving local economy and social development and take its place in the national intellectual self-renovation system.

  In recent years, the Party building, the ideological and political work and student management work of the school have also made great achievement. The Sub-Party committee of the school was awarded "National advanced basic-level party organization" in 2006. Around 40% of undergraduate students purses higher degree studies upon graduation. The employment rate of the graduates is consistently ranked top in Shanxi University, for which the school has been named "Advanced faculty of employment guidance" by the university for many years.

  Relying on the advantages of multi-disciplinary development of Shanxi University, the school aims to become a base for high-quality professional talents cultivation, provide more qualified talents and intellectuals to support Shanxi Province and national economic development and social advance.
