School of Physics and Electronics Engineering

The School of Physics & Electronic Engineering, Shanxi University, grew out of the Physics Department founded in 1936, now consists of three departments: Physics, Electronic Information Science and Technology, and Photoelectronic Science and Technology. There are four institutes or laboratory: Institute of Opto-Electronics, Institute of Theoretical Physics, Laser Spectroscopy Laboratory and Institute of Modern Communication Technology. There is one state key laboratory named State Key Laboratory of Quantum Optics and Quantum Optics Devices. The School has total 120 faculty and staff. Of its faculty members, there are 27 professors, 30 associate professors and 35 lecturers. There is one academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences, three professors of Yangtze Scholar, two winners of Distinguished Youths and one Creative Research Group supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China. The total number of graduates is more than 6000 (as of October 2010). There are 993 students enrolled in 2010, including 726 undergraduate students and 267 graduate students.

The School has 8 doctoral programs, 12 master’s degree programs and 2 professional degree programs, which cover all eight research fields in physics for Phd students and some other fields such as Optical Engineering, Physical Electronics, and Information and Communication Engineering for master’s degree students. It has 4 undergraduate majors: Physics (Talent Training Base of National Basic Science Research and Teaching), Applied Physics, Electronic Information Science and Technology, and Optical Information Science and Technology.

Optics is the state key discipline which houses the State Key Lab of Quantum Optics and Quantum Optics Devices. Other important disciplines include the Theoretical Physics, Atomic & Molecular Physics, Optical Engineering, Information and Communication Engineering, Condensed Matter Physics, Particle Physics & Nuclear Physics, and Radio Physics. The School has a Physics Experiment Center, a state experimental teaching demonstration center, a State Teaching Team named Optics & Atomic Physics teaching Team. “Modern Physics Experiment” and “Atomic Physics” are the state top-quality curricula and Physics, Electronic Information Science and Technology, and Optical Information Science and Technology are renowned majors.

The School has involved many important research projects recent years, such as the national key scientific research programs(also called 973 program) , 863 programs, and the national key programs from NSF of China. The total funding is over 25 Million RMB in 2010. Since 2002, more than 700 refereed papers were published on scholarly journals, such as Physical Review Letter, Phys.Rev.A(B,D), Optics Letters and Physics Letters, etc. The School faculty has received wide recognition for their achievements in science and engineering and it has received a National Medal of Natural Science, a National Medal of Technology, and over 20 Medals of Science and Technology on the provincial or ministerial level.
