School of History and Culture

  The School of History and Culture is one of century-long institutions of Shanxi University. As early as in 1902 when Shanxi University was founded, the “history of the world” and “history of ancient China” were the compulsory courses for students of Chinese and Western departments. In 1936, the Department of History was officially founded, and was renamed as the School of History and Culture in 2003. Through decades of years’ efforts, the school has developed into an academic institution with comprehensive and multi-level schooling system. Now it has three departments: the Department of History Studies, the Department of Archeology and Museology and the Department of Tourism Management, accordingly with four majors: history, archeology, museology and tourism management. The school now has 1 A-level History Studies Master’s Degree Program (including 8 B-level Master’s Degree Programs), 1 B-level Management Master’s Degree Program(Tourism Management), 2 B-level Doctoral Degree Program (Contemporary and Modern Chinese History and Archaeology and Museology), 1 post-doctoral research station (History Studies), 1 key provincial discipline ( Contemporary and Modern Chinese History), 1 key provincial construct discipline (Tourism Management), 2 higher education humanitarian and social science research base ( Economic and social Development and Research Base for Central and Western Regions, Tourism Planning and Research Base), 2 provincial research centers ( Research Center for Regional Sociology in Shanxi, Research Center for Northern Dynasties Studies in Shanxi). The school has an enrollment of 540 undergraduates, 210 postgraduates and 20 candidates for Ph.D.s.

  To meet the demand of economic and social culture development of Shanxi, the school has made great efforts to explore talent-training methods, and collaborated with Shanxi Provincial Tourism Administration to found Tourism Institute of Shanxi University in 1997, and made a joint cooperation with Shanxi Provincial Bureau of Cultural Relics to establish the Institute of Cultural Relics and Museology in 2001. All these efforts have greatly contributed to the development of tourism, cultural relic and museum by cultivating a good batch of talents and have been acclaimed in the province.

  The School of History and Culture has a faculty with significant academic prestige and education experience. It has a good tradition of rigorous teaching and curious studying, and is proud of her solid undergraduate program. Now the school has 53 full-time staff, including 11 professors, 13 associate professors, 24 lecturers, and 5 teaching assistants, accounting for 21%, 25%, 45%, and 9% of the total number respectively. It has 35 teachers with Ph.D. degree (including those studying for doctorate), 13 with Master’s Degree and 5 with Bachelor’s Degree, with the proportion of 66%, 25%, and 9% respectively.

  The school has made great achievements on academic research in recent years, it has published more than 400 papers on some leading journals such as History Studies, Religion Studies, World History; over 20 monographs, and has won more than 20 provincial and ministry-level awards, undertaken over 30 national, provincial and ministry-level research projects with a total research fund of 7 million yuan.

  The school is well equipped with cultural relic exhibition room, tourism laboratory, language studio and library. The exhibition room covers an area of 150 square meters with a collection of more than 2000 cultural relics; the laboratory and language studio are important teaching and practice place for tourism majors; the library has an area of 300 square meters with 50,000 books.

  Inherited with a hundred year of traditions, the School of History and Culture is striving for applying for A-level Doctorate Program with discipline construction as foundation and talent training as central task, and developing into a prestigious base both for research and talent training that has unique features at home and will be well-known abroad.
