Graduate Program

Shanxi University (SXU), which started recruiting graduate students in 1981, is among the first to confer master’s degree after China’s resumption of graduate education. In 1988, the SXU Graduate Division and its relevant Party branch were founded and shortly after that, the Graduate Division began to confer doctorate in 1993 and established the Office of Key Disciplines Development in 2000. In November 2001, the SXU Graduate Division shifted to the SXU Graduate School or the Graduate School of Shanxi University. In 2008, seven years after the shift, the Graduate School formed its own Party committee. At present, the Graduate School of Shanxi University consists of seven offices: Office of Admission, Office of Training, Office of Academic Degree, Office of Professional Degree, Office of Disciplinary Development, Office of Party Committee and Office of General Affairs.

Up till now, Shanxi University has nine centers for post-doctoral studies covering disciplines such as physics, chemistry, philosophy, environmental science and engineering, physical education, management science and engineering, computer science and technology, biology and history, six first-level disciplines with doctorate conferment such as physics, philosophy, history of science and technology, management science and engineering, biology and chemistry, 48 programs for doctorate, 137 programs for master’s degree with the coverage of eleven disciplines, i.e. philosophy, economics, law, pedagogy, literature, history, science, engineering, agriculture, medicine and management, and seven programs for professional degree including master of law, master of business administration, master of public administration, master of engineering, master of education, master of physical education, master of fine arts. Apart from that, the university has been given the authorization to recruit on-the-job college teachers to conduct their in-service study for master’s degree. Shanxi University also has two national key disciplines: optics and philosophy of science and technology, ten provincial key disciplines such as inorganic chemistry, theoretical physics, environmental science, fundamental mathematics, computer application technology, applied chemistry, management science and engineering, atomic and molecular physics, modern Chinese history and Zoology, eighteen key developing programs with provincial support including chemistry, ancient Chinese literature, computer software and theory, optical engineering, administration, ecology, biochemistry and molecular biology, analytical chemistry, economic history, physical education and training, botany, tourism management, economic law, pedagogic principle, foreign linguistics and applied linguistics, Art, pharmacognosy and bromatology, and three key fostering programs: communication and information systems, environmental engineering, control theory and engineering. It is worth noting that the Laboratory of Quantum Optics and Quantum Devices is a national key laboratory and the Research Centre for Philosophy of Science and Technology is a national key base for humanities and social sciences under the Ministry of Education. Besides, the Laboratory of Chemical Biology and Molecular Engineering, the Laboratory of Computational Intelligence and the Chinese Information Processing and the Center for Fine Chemicals Engineering are also key laboratories or centers under the Ministry of Education. All this shows that Shanxi University is at the forefront of the disciplinary development among the institutions of higher learning in Shanxi province.

With the rapid development of academic degree and graduate education in Shanxi University, the number of graduate students and supervisors scales up, and so far there are a total number of 142 doctoral advisors, 761  graduate supervisors, and 438 tutors for professional degree. Shanxi University also attaches much importance to the echelon formation of supervisors and it is a good illustration that among various medal-conferring ceremonies organized by Shanxi Provincial government in recent years there are 11 professors awarded the title “Best Supervisor in Shanxi Province” and 4 supervisor teams conferred the title “Best Supervisor Team in Shanxi Province”.

It is without doubt that with the rapid expansion of graduate education Shanxi University has provided a large pool of higher professional personnel for the economic and social development of Shanxi Province and the country as a whole. By the end of 2009, the number of graduate students and those conferred degrees had totaled more than 6,000 and 9,000 respectively. Currently, there are 462 students studying for their doctorates and 6,516 for their master’s degrees. Despite the growing number of graduate students, the teaching quality does not lose momentum. A case in point is that in recent years the number of Best Dissertation and Best Thesis at a provincial level has reached 86, 4 doctoral dissertations have been nominated for the National Best Dissertation and one has finally been awarded the title “National Best Dissertation”.

Realizing that the development of academic degree and graduate education is indispensable for building a research-oriented university which can serve as a model for local education, Shanxi University regards its disciplinary development as a locomotive and makes an effort to promote the development of graduate education in an all-round manner. Generally, we have achieved the goal that the range of graduate education is rapidly extending, the quality of graduate is significantly increasing and the stamina of the SXU development has been greatly enhanced. In short, all this has laid a solid foundation for the further development of Shanxi University.
